Iron Man 2 Generating Advance Excitement
By Joseph M Chapman
Living in a testosterone-filled household like mine, with 3 teenage boys and a husband who still thinks visits to the comic book store are a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon, it’d be virtually impossible to escape the excitement and rumination over the approaching releases of the flick Iron Man 2. Dinner talks lately seem focused around whether Iron Man or War Machine is the better superhero and whether James Rhodes ( alto ego of War Machine ) provided the moral compass so necessary to restrain the extravagances of Tony Stark across the years. Luckily, for me, time I’ve gotten used to these sorts of talks and sometimes even make a contribution to them. Fan who really liked the first Iron Man movie, computer effects and all, whether or not I’m not a comic book fan.
Naturally, the truly important question asked, not simply by my family, but by fans around the planet, is will the new Iron Man 2 flick will measure up to the original, which is an admitted family and fan favorite? With the return of the original cast and crew, most importantly Robert Downey Jr. As Tony Stark, Gwynneth Paltrow as Pepper Pots, and naturally director/writer Jon Favreau, the answer seems to be an unequivocal yes.
Recent trailers and poster releases seem to be driving comic backers and casual fans alike into a frenzy of expectation. Naturally, the addition of some high quality talent to bring life to some new characters, such as Don Cheadle playing the cool James Rhodes or War Machine ( replacing the originally cast Terrance Howard ), Samuel Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Nick ire, and even a spot for the comedian, Gary Shandling as a frustrated senator, should additionally be a great addition to Iron Man 2 cast. For fans worried about the casting of the bad guys, previews featuring a CGI augmented, Ivan Vanko or Whiplash, and a slinky, attractive Scarlett Johansen as Black Widow guarantee to bring a complete other dimension of menace to the cast. It surprised me to learn that wonder originally opposed the casting of Robert Downey Jr, as Tony Stark in the first flick, since in spite of some past personal issues I myself think he is one of the most accomplished actors around and have been a considerable time fan. In reality, for me, without a doubt, Robert Downey Jr.
Personally, I believed the director exhibited personal genius in creating powerful advance buzz for the releasing of the sequel, with the appearance of the cast of Iron Man 2 at the Comic-Con international show back in July. It was here that he first convinced fans the follow up would remain constant to the exhilarating tone set by the 1st – accomplished with an entertaining mixture of impressive visuals and an amusing, smart-alec quality with strong acting, clever dialogue and good sound track.
The fan base at Comic-Con answered enthusiastically, loving the 5 mins of screened action for the imminent film, and the interaction of the cast, almost half a year before the official trailers were released for public viewing, showing uncontrollable enthusiasm for the project. The buzz just keeps building. If the keenness generated by the trailers is any indication, Iron Man 2 looks to be a crowd pleaser and the 1st smash hit of the summer.
