Gay Marriage Legality – A Serious Issue of Equality

Gay Marriage Legality – A Serious Issue of Equality
By Cole Heggie

Marriage is defined as a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship.

When humans became civilized enough to create a democratic system of government, they created this government to do a service for them. Act on behalf of the people, for the people. People seem to forget that the government is a public service. They are supposed to be doing things for us. When the government has come to a point where it is not allowing people to do things that do not harm anyone else, well, Huston, we have a problem.

When two people that love each other want to get married, what does their sex matter? A marriage is supposed to unite those in the name of love, and create a permanent bond between them. The gay population is no different than the straight. They are contributing members of society, and are fundamentally the same as everyone else, in the sense that they set out on life with one goal in mind; happiness. A huge amount of the gay population would not even be known as gay if they did not tell us.

Why? Because they are no different than straight people! Straight people are much more guilty of letting their sexuality negatively affect other people’s daily lives. I guarantee there are many famous closet gay men and women who are well known for positively influencing our world but simply never told us because they knew of our ignorance. It is sad because, if we came across an old note that belonged to one of these people after their death that revealed they were gay, people would probably lose respect for this person.

The majority of the world does not allow marriage to be a process for straight and same sex couples. There are only seven countries in the world that give the same legal status of marriage for both same sex and straight couples. While many countries feed us this concept of civil unions with same benefits as marriage, the gay community sees it as embarrassing and dehumanizing.

The argument for the opposition revolves around the definition of marriage. They consider it as a union between a man and a woman, and that anything outside of this strict definition is not marriage and should never be referred to as such. They consider this one of those issues, “This is the way it always was, this is the way it will always be.” This is exactly the type of thinking that screams ignorance.

Don’t you think it’s time we changed our definition to include same sex marriage? It is clearly unequal right now, in a world where equality is preached so often. Remember, racial slavery existed in the United States less than one hundred years ago. Woman’s rights soon followed. We’re still fighting a fight for equality every day, and the only progress that has ever occurred in these movements, and the only successful way to progress for time to come, is through individuals choosing to make a difference.
