Put More Fun in Your Run

Put More Fun in Your Run
By Dr. Kirk Mahoney

If you are feeling burned out with your running, then you are more likely to skip days or even weeks. This can lead to poor performance in future races, which will tend to discourage you even further.

To escape this negative cycle — or to avoid it, if you feel that you are heading toward a burned-out feeling — you can use the Law of Attraction to your advantage.

In particular, you can put more fun in your run. Here are several suggestions for how you can do this.

  • Whistle. Whistling can be a lot of fun because it can transport your thoughts back to childhood. And whistling encourages good control of breathing. Granted, you probably will not want to do this while running with others or in quiet neighborhoods. But there are many environments where it can be a lot of fun to whistle as you run.
  • Hum. This is similar to the “Whistle” idea. But, if you never mastered whistling, then this is a good option. As with whistling, you can hum tunes that you remember. Or, if you are feeling especially creative, then you can hum tunes that you make up as you run.
  • Sing. This, too, is similar to the “Whistle” idea, but it may require the most skill — and the most courage! Some people can quickly make themselves happy by singing. If you are one of these people, then try this suggestion on your next run. You may soon be singing a new tune to yourself about your running!
  • Wave. Try waving to every motorist who passes you. Some drivers will not even notice you. Other drivers will notice you and think you are weird. Still other drivers may smile and tap their horns. Make a game of seeing how many drivers you can get to smile and honk.
  • Say hello to other runners. Many runners get so caught up with their running that they forget to smile or even to acknowledge other runners. As with the “Wave” idea for passing motorists, try saying hello to passing runners. “Good morning!” or “Looking strong!” or another compliment can put a smile on another runner’s face, which will put a smile on your face, too.
  • Wear a silly hat or jersey. Many runners are so accustomed to seeing typical running caps and tops that you can make them smile by wearing a silly hat or wearing a custom-lettered running jersey that says something silly. And their smiles will make you smile, too.

What fun ideas would you add to this list?
