My Love Affair With Pizza
By Matt J Allen
I love pizza. If I could only have one food for the rest of my life it would be pizza. It’s great for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is truly the perfect food and when ordered right contains all the food groups.
I can’t remember the first time I had pizza. I wish I could. It would have been one of those cherished memories that I would have loved to look back upon with fondness in my heart and peace in my soul.
I’ve never had an anchovy pizza. In fact I don’t think I have ever been to a pizza restaurant that actually offered anchovies as an item you could add to your pie. However, I have had halibut, shrimp and lobster on a pizza. And yes, it was delicious.
Personally I think this anchovy thing is just propaganda thrown out there by the salad industry to make pizzas unappealing, shame on them.
As far as the great debate between which is better, NY style or Chicago style, in my book, who cares? It’s delicious whether it is thin crust or deep dish. My personal preference is for something in between but I’ll take it any way I can.
Eat it with a fork like a well mannered person? Fold it in half like a New Yorker? Double hand it to slide it in your mouth? Again, who cares? As long as you are savoring the magnificent tastes and relishing the beauty of the bounty on that pie, eat it how ever the heck you want.
I’ll eat a pizza with just about any topping there is. The only topping that I can’t stand on a pizza is bell peppers. It doesn’t matter if they are green, red, or yellow. I just can’t stand them on a pizza. But I love them any other way.
Until I met my wife I always assumed you had to have meat on a pizza. If there was no meat, then it really could not be called a pizza. When she introduced me to vegetarian pies and my favorite, the margarita, I was more than pleasantly surprised.
I’ll even eat crappy pizza. Of course I need to slather it in Ranch dressing or hot sauce, but I’ll still eat it. Why? Because I love pizza and I’ll chow down even if it tastes like the box it was delivered in.
If there is one thing I hate that some places do. It has to be the use of corn meal. I understand that they may need to do this so the crust does not stick to anything. But I think it is just a plain awful thing to do to a crust. I don’t like the flavor of it nor the crunchiness. But alas, I’ll still eat because I’ll take it any way I can.
The next time you are eating a good slice. Stop and think about it. Savor it. Let all your senses become part of that experience. Enjoy every last little bit of that pizza including the crust which you usually toss aside.
