Cuban Sandwich – A Taste of Cuba

Cuban Sandwich – A Taste of Cuba
By Pollux Parker

Who would have thought that the ham and cheese sandwich we are enjoying now as a simple snack or sometimes as a meal during lunch actually originated from Cuba as the common Cuban sandwich? In the beginning of the twentieth century, this sandwich is prepared by simple deli and cafeteria and served traditionally for locals working in cigar factories and sugar mills.

Not just an ordinary sandwich with a simple filling, you can find in this sandwich several ingredients which can also introduce you to the Cuban taste and liking for variety and spice. Reflecting its colorful culture and the vibrant nation the Cuban flag represents, a typical Cuban sandwich consists of a satisfying cut of ham, salami or roast pork, a creamy slice of cheese, a touch of butter, mustard, sweet and sour pickles on a Cuban bread which is roughly eight to ten inches long.

Not only does it give us a hint of the liking of Cubans for spices and lively taste even in a supposedly-simple sandwich, it likewise tells us about the economic and employment situation of an ordinary Cuban that time. Cubans would sail to Florida and to their country again after work. Thus, their food must be convenient for them to carry and to quickly eat as well – they could not afford to have a long savory meal, as they still have to work or head back to their own country.

Through series of migration, the Cubans were able to bring along their Cuban sandwich on the shores of Florida, Miami, New Jersey, New York and the rest of America where it is now a common quick-fix hunger chaser for the busy city worker.
