Why Do People Think It’s Okay to Drink and Drive?
By Angela Linton
For many, many years, we have been warned that it is against the law to drink and drive and not only because of that, but because it can change many people’s lives. Yet, it appears as though these warnings are falling on deaf ears. People are still getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, drunk and sometimes, before they even leave the parking lot, they cause an accident.
However, the accident was not their fault because the other person was not looking where he/she was going, or, it may be that the other vehicle was not parked correctly. Yes, listening to them, it is never their fault, because, after all, they were not really that drunk.
The fact that this is still happening in our society and around the world, it begs the question, why do people think it’s okay to drink and drive? Well, the following suggestions are put forth.
They Care About…
They care about their vehicle. Yes, perhaps they do not want to leave it in a location where it might or might not be stolen or vandalized, because, after all, they have put a lot of money into it.
Yes, this machine is a lot more important to them that the lives of those around them and it is more important than their own life, as well.
However, this same method of transportation they are trying to protect may be used to change the lives of many and this also includes their own life. Additionally, the same destruction that they thought they were preventing, they may create. Yes, in their desire to protect it, they may be the ones to destroy it.
They Do Not Care
Other Users
They do not care about the other people who will be using the roads with them. They are not concerned about hitting someone’s father, or mother, or brother or sister. No, they do not worry that a little girl may be crossing at the crosswalk with her elderly grandmother, or a little boy may let go of his grandfather’s hand to run back and pick up the toy that fell from his hand.
On the other hand though, no one may be on the road at the time that they chose to drive, but they do not consider that their vehicle may crash into a house where a baby is fast asleep in his/her crib.
Family And Friends
When a loved on is hurt or killed in this manner, it will affect families, friends and even strangers. The troubles that an unexpected injury can cause, will affect the injured person’s loved ones or the gap that a death can cause is nothing that anyone look forward to.
Their Life
They are not concerned about their own life. They believe that they are invincible. Perhaps the reasoning is, I am too young to die, I have too many things going for me, it was just two beers, I’ve done it before and the list goes on.
Above The Law
These drivers are laughing at the law. The law cannot do them anything, because they are above it. No one will see them and besides, if they hit someone, they can always keep driving, because there is a name for it, it is called hit and run and many people have done it before and they were never caught.
Yes, the law does not apply to them, it applies to the other people who are not as intelligent as they are.
