What is a Poltergeist?

What is a Poltergeist?
By Hazel Ford

The term “Poltergeist” is derived from the conjoining of two German words – poltern – to create a disturbance – and geist – meaning spirit. It literally means “noisy ghost” and evidence of such activity has been recorded as far back as ancient Roman times.

There are a number of theories as to how poltergeist activity actually occurs; within paranormal circles a poltergeist is an entity that is able to interact with the material world that we are in. They are able to move things, throw small objects, touch people, make rapping and knocking sounds as well as create smells.

During ancient times, poltergeists were deemed to be demons or some form of demonic manifestation. An account of early poltergeist activity has been documented by ancient Roman writer, Titus Livius, where a shower of stones, thrown from unseen hands, scared a legion of Roman soldiers.

However, during the 20th Century, a number of leading scientists have undertaken further research in order to discover how poltergeist activity occurs. One theory is that poltergeist activity is actually triggered, unknowingly, by humans! Expressions of intense emotion, such as anger, and stress from a person are deemed to be able to cause inexplicable physical manifestations such as levitation. The person causing this is usually unaware that they are actually causing the disturbance because it is the subconscious mind which has, somehow, found a way to release any repressed emotion through psychokinesis.

However, poltergeist activity that happens without the presence of a human is attributed to the remnants of intense emotions in a particular location. Have you ever had that feeling about somewhere that gives you “the creeps” without any apparent reason? In this case, poltergeist activity is deemed to be a stored manifestation of human emotion located in a certain place where something tragic or dramatic occurred, and is transmitted into today’s realm through some form of trigger.

Although that there are a number of theories available to explain the presence of poltergeists, there just remains one thing to discuss, and that is the fact that it does happen and they do exist! What are they really? No one is quite sure, but the mystery surrounding this phenomenon is so compelling that it intrigues us all and is probably one of the main reasons why people want to go on a ghost hunt.

Haunted Happenings have been investigating the paranormal at the UK’s most haunted locations, including haunted castles, pubs, theatres, mansions and old school, in search of paranormal activity.
