By Chris Patrick

December 26th, 1980, the day after Christmas, and only a few days before the New Year. Quite a few service-people are still on guard at RAF Woodbridge, near Suffolk in the UK. However, their minds are concerned with coming parties or missing their families.

What they didn’t expect, was for unidentified lights to appear West of their position, and descend into the forest. But this is what happened, at least 3 nights in a row, in Rendlesham Forest.

The Rendlesham Forest incident, as its known, is probably the most publicized UFO event to happen in Britain, and is compared with Roswell in terms of importance. On December 26th, 27th, and 28th strange lights were spotted outside of RAF Woodbridge by USAF Personnel, and were investigated. Local Police joined service people, though many came to the conclusion that the lights were from the nearby Oxford Ness Lighthouse.

The following two nights, similar sightings were made, and even confirmed by one Lt. Colonel Halt; the deputy base commander. Colonel Halt even went so far as to use a micro-cassette recorder to create audio of the investigation. Some have speculated that during the investigation, that video was made of the supposed objects, and is kept by the Air Force.

Over the course of the next few days, quite a bit of evidence emerged. Triangular impressions thought to be dents made by landing gear, were found. However, local police came to the conclusion that these same impressions could have been made by farm animals.

Overall, it is harder to tell what happened, and harder still to prove that Extraterrestrial Contact was made. However, the presence of multiple eye-witnesses, all of them being US Military Personnel, and one being an Active Duty Lt Colonel, is definitely cause to take the matter seriously.

Chris Patrick is an aspiring author, with an interest in unexplainable phenomenon. Tired of seeing only the same old UFO accounts on various websites, he started this site, so that anonymous people could post their accounts without fear of any reprisal or ridicule. If you would like to submit your own alien encounter account (or critique), you can do so here. If you do decide to post, he asks that you format and spell check, and you probably want to submit anonymously.

LAKE MARY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) – The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) says more than 1,000 new reports of UFO sightings have been received since October 25, 2011.

A large number of reports have flooded in just this year, with increased sightings in 36 of the 50 states. Over a hundred sightings were logged by NUFORC on New Year’s Eve with 13 sightings reported in Florida.

On December 11, 2011 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, three people see an estimated 8 orange objects pass from south to north in the night sky, covering approximately 60 degrees of arc in an estimated five minutes. Two more lights appeared shortly after the first group had disappeared, and followed approximately the same path as the first group had followed.

Almost a full month earlier in Berlin, Wisconsin, a woman driving home from work encountered a car stopped on a rural highway. She drives past the other vehicle slowly, rounds the next curve, and then witnesses a bizarre curved row of quadrilateral lights ahead of her. The lights appear to be moving away from her position, and then they suddenly begin to disappear from her sight, as if a curtain is being drawn over them.

NUFORC staff members have posted hundreds of reports similar to these on their website , following what they say has been a “Herculean session of proof-reading.”

FOX 35 spoke with Peter Davenport, NUFORC Director, to find out what’s behind the increased number of sightings.

“Man on a Mission,” a film documenting Richard Garriott’s journey to the International Space Station (ISS) may have hit theaters, but there is another movie NASA apparently doesn’t want you to see.

Yes, the space agency is currently censoring a second film shot by Garriott, who spent some $30 million of his own cash to be a tourist on board the station.

Dubbed “Apogee of Fear,” the eight-minute amateur sci-fi clip tells the story of an alien entity hiding somewhere on the station. The unknown life form is detected by the ISS crew after oxygen consumption levels rise inexplicably.

Although the film is obviously little more than harmless fun, the space agency is adamantly refusing to allow the clip to go public – despite requests from prominent institutions like the Smithsonian.

“NASA has, so far, decided that since it’s filmed onboard NASA hardware and uses NASA astronauts as actors, they have resisted me releasing it publicly,” Garriott told Space.com.

“It’s too playful… It’s just not their message.”

Although Garriott says he is disappointed by NASA’s decision, the video game designer emphasized that he doesn’t believe the space agency actively dislikes “Apogee of Fear” or wishes to suppress it. Rather, says Garriot, NASA simply sees no logical reason to support it.

“It’s just that the default answer is no,” he added.

Personally, I’m not sure NASA is adopting the correct strategy here. Obviously Garriott’s film is a work of fiction trying to imagine a “what if?” scenario taking place in an actual location like the International Space Station.

IMHO, NASA needs to lighten up a little. Sci-fi has played a critical role in moving the space program forward by inspiring thousands of scientists and astronauts over the years. Seriously. A little more romanticism and a little less censorship would go a long way in restoring the public’s faith in NASA and our flagging space program.

“To boldly go where no man has gone before,” a phrase we all know, and one we grew up with. Today, it is more than likely that private citizens will actually get that chance. No, they may not go very far into space, but they may very well someday visit a space hotel, a space station, a lunar colony, or at least experience weightlessness in low Earth orbit. Right now, there are waiting lists, and folks made deposits worth tens of thousands of dollars to private space companies to experience that dream.

Virgin Galactic is finishing up its first private spacecraft, and it is nearing completion of its Earth-based spaceport in New Mexico. NASA has also already contracted with several private space companies to help it with its needs to move people and supplies from Earth to the international space station. Many worry that private companies may not be able to handle all of NASA’s slated and future missions. However, I would submit to you that it was private companies which built all of the satellites, and all of the components of the international space station. It was also private enterprise, and free markets which built the space shuttle. It was built by private companies under contract.

The Wall Street Journal had a great article on the privatization of space on August 17, 2011. The article was written by Andy Pasztor and titled “Private Space Taxis Race to the Launchpad,” and the article spoke of NASA’s contract with SpaceX, which also gives hope for investors who’d like to invest in the future of private space operations. Once these private companies and corporations have the money they need to move the ball forward, they will most likely be five or six times as the efficient as NASA using the same amount of money.

Now then, many folks on the Space Coast of Florida have lost their jobs due to NASA’s budget cuts. Yes, I understand their plight, but I also believe that many of those folks will be able to get jobs in the private sector, as their expertise, knowledge, and worldly know how is worth a pretty penny. NASA has given contracts to many more companies such as; Armadillo Aerospace, Near Space Corporation, Up Aerospace Incorporated, Virgin Galactic, SpaceX, Masten Space Systems, XCOR, and several others.

There has been some talk about the challenges that NASA was facing hiring the Russians to get us back and forth to the International Space Station. Meanwhile, the competition is on because the Chinese are building their own, albeit much smaller, space station. Unfortunately the Chinese will not have a toilet in their space station, and it is quite possible that they will use “flying toilets” – a term used by those living in the “Kibera Slum” in Nairobi Kenya, which basically amounts to discharging human waste into a plastic bag, and then throwing it outside onto a neighbor’s roof.

We know that China has contributed to space junk, and it will be unfortunate if they also contribute to flying orbiting toilets. Because even if you get hit with a bag of human feces, if it is traveling at 17,000 miles an hour in orbit, it can do some real damage, and that’s no bull crap either. But jokes aside, this space race is on, and it’s time for the United States to pick up the pace and take us into the 21st century.

Perhaps we can realize the science fiction futures written by writers such as; Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Ben Bova, and Gene Roddenberry. In fact, it is interesting that DARPA has also started a group which will focus on building 100 years space craft. There have been a few space ventures, and space entrepreneurs who have already set targets of going to Mars, even if it’s only a one-way affair. In other words, if you go, you may not come back in this lifetime, but you will definitely go down (or up rather) in history.

When it comes to space hotels, it appears that Bigelow Aerospace is on the leading-edge of expandable and inflatable habitats for low Earth orbit; where will they take them next? There are at least 12 countries that have plans to build spaceports, or have signed letters of intent or agreements with private space companies such as Virgin Galactic. There are also hundreds of thousands of individuals who are waiting on waiting lists to go into space, so there is plenty of money to go around for those private space companies ready to take people into space, and bring them back safely.

Okay so, are there any risks? Indeed there are, one risk that we have considered is that we are approaching a period of solar maximum, and there will be solar flares which produce solar radiation which could damage orbiting space hotels, or spacecraft which happened to be in orbit at the wrong time. Luckily, NASA also has the ability to predict solar flares before they hit Earth in ample time to allow the safe return of space tourists prior to the arrival of the solar flare. Still, solar space scientists believe that starting in 2013 we might be in for a heck of a ride with regards to X-Flares of high magnitude challenging human space operations.

The Russians are also getting in on the game, and they are building a spaceport near the equator in South America. They hope to use this location to launch rockets carrying satellites, astronauts, cosmonauts, and supplies into space. Launching from near the equator gives them a 15% advantage, and it requires less fuel to reach escape velocity from that equatorial region of our planet. Yes, there will be challenges ahead for the privatization of space flight. However this is a great time to see what sorts of technologies humans are capable of.

Personally, I’m all in when it comes to private space flight, and I believe this is a step in the right direction, and a great leap for mankind’s future. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think about investing in private space companies, and book your tour into space as part of a dream that you will never forget during your life experience. Think on it.

updated 1/14/2012 5:27:21 PM ET

Russia’s botched Mars probe mission Phobos-Grunt is fast approaching a fiery death, with just one or two days remaining before it falls from space, experts and Russian space officials say.

“The European Space Agency’s current re-entry prediction for Phobos-Grunt … points to the early evening (Central European Time) on Sunday, Jan. 15, with an uncertainty of plus/minus five orbits,” equal to plus or minus 7.5 hours, Heiner Klinkrad, head of the space debris office at ESA’s European Space Operations Center in Darmstadt, Germany, told Space.com in an email Saturday.

A statement from Russia’s Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) also pegged Sunday as the crash day for Phobos-Grunt, but went even further. According to the statement, released in Russian, the 14-ton spacecraft filled with fuel is expected to fall on Sunday and may crash in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile.

Russian space officials pegged the potential crash time as occurring at about 4:51 p.m. ET Sunday, although major uncertainties still remain. There is a chance the spacecraft could fall earlier in the day, oron Monday.

Falling Russian Mars probe
ESA and a host of other space agencies and organizations have been closely monitoring the decay of the doomed Russian spacecraft. [Infographic: The Fall of Russia's Doomed Phobos-Grunt]

Russian space agency officials say they expect that, at most, 20 to 30 fragments of Phobos-Grunt may survive the fiery re-entry and reach Earth’s surface.

But given that most of Earth’s surface is covered with water, the odds that these leftovers — with a predicted total mass of less than 440 pounds (200 kilograms) — would fall onto dry land is very small, scientists say.

Russia launched the Phobos-Grunt mission on Nov. 9. The spacecraft was designed to fly to Phobos, one of two moons circling Mars.

Once at Phobos, the space probe was expected to collect samples from the Martian moon and then return them to Earth in 2014. However, shortly after launch, the spacecraft failed to boost itself out of Earth orbit to begin the trip to Mars.

Packed with toxic fuel
One unique aspect of the Phobos-Grunt re-entry is its large cache of onboard fuel.

While the dry mass of the wayward satellite is just 2.5 tons, the probe totes about 11 tons of toxic propellant, which went unused when the craft became marooned in Earth orbit and didn’t head outbound to Mars. [Photos of the Phobos-Grunt Mars Mission]

Orbital debris experts suggest that Phobos-Grunt’s fuel tanks, reportedly made of aluminum that contains unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, or UDMH, will explode high above the Earth. Those heat-succumbing tanks would therefore release the load of propellant to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

“The ‘it just burns up’ issue remains, invisible frankly,” said Martin Ross, director of The Aerospace Corp.’s Center for Launch Emissions and Atmospheric Research in El Segundo, Calif.

“What is needed is a full accounting of the material that gets vaporized and re-condenses into small particles that may remain in the upper atmosphere for many years,” Ross told Space.com. “Some of these particles may influence chemistry, since the vaporized materials are exotic in some cases, in that region of the atmosphere in subtle ways. It remains a question mark.”

Flying in space is hard
Phobos-Grunt is also outfitted with a nose-cone shaped descent vehicle wrapped in a thermal protection system. It was meant to haul back to Earth samples collected at Phobos. That hardware was designed to sky-dive through Earth’s atmosphere to a hard landing without parachute in the Sary Shagan missile test range in Kazakhstan — if the Mars mission achieved success.

Nestled inside that re-entry sample capsule is the Planetary Society’s tiny Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment (LIFE) biomodule, which carries a select set of microorganisms.

“Trackers won’t be able to predict where debris may fall until just a few hours before the event, so it’s impossible to say whether the biomodule will be recovered,” the Planetary Society said in a statement.

“What we’ve seen is heartbreaking reinforcement of an oft-repeated maxim. Space is hard! We are disappointed that our remarkable test of the hardiness of living organisms will not get the 34 months in deep space we had hoped for,” said the Planetary Society’s chief executive officer, Bill Nye, also known as the Science Guy.

“We also offer our condolences to the China National Space Administration; it’s their first Mars mission and a disappointment,” Nye added.

Like LIFE, China’s Yinghuo-1 orbiter hoped to catch a ride to Mars on Phobos-Grunt in order to study the Red Planet.

Crash from the past
Russia has a bit of history regarding satellites falling from space and tumbling onto land.

Due to a propulsion system failure, the Cosmos 954 spacecraft — a Soviet nuclear-powered radar ocean reconnaissance satellite — fell into Canada’s Northwest Territories in January 1978. It had been in space for only four months.

Large amounts of radioactive material from the satellite’s fall were scattered from Great Slave Lake into northern Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Subsequently, a joint U.S.-Canadian cleanup operation picked up roughly 0.1 percent of Cosmos 954′s power source. The spacecraft’s nuclear reactor worked on uranium, enriched with isotope of uranium-235.

Canadian authorities determined that all but two of the Cosmos 954 fragments recovered were radioactive. Some fragments located proved to be of lethal radioactivity.

The spacecraft’s plummet into Canada also marked the first time that the adjudicative process built into the United Nations’ Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects was put to the test.

Canada’s claims against the Soviet Union added up to more than $6 million. In 1981, the Soviets coughed up $3 million to settle the Canadian claim of reimbursement.

Unlike the Cosmos satellite, Russia’s Phobos-Grunt is a solar-powered spacecraft. One instrument on the probe does carry a small amount of the radioactive element cobalt-57. However, Lev Zelenyi, director of the Space Research Institute in Moscow and chairman of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Solar System Exploration Board, has stated that the amount contained in that instrument is less than 10 micrograms and no significant problems are anticipated.

Standby alert
As Phobos-Grunt draws closer and closer to its fiery finale, a worldwide team of skywatchers is on standby alert in the hopes of spotting the fall.

“Experienced observers know that the probability of seeing any given satellite re-entry is very small, so they maintain very low expectations,” said Canada-based Ted Molczan, a leader in the citizen network of observers. “Those who are keen to observe one [a re-entry of space hardware] will monitor the trend in the decay estimates.

“If it appears that re-entry will occur at about the time Earth’s rotation drags their location through the plane of the orbit, then they may go out and have a look, still fully expecting to see nothing, but knowing they have maximized their personal odds,” Molczan said.

A string of glowing orbs that momentarily floated over the Valley on March 13, 1997, may have been visible for a short period of time, but it launched a mystery that, in some minds, remains today.

On a clear night with a light breeze, the Phoenix Lights appeared as if from nowhere, traveling slowly across the sky in a flattened V shape. The distance between the lights seemed equal and precise, ruling out a natural phenomenon.

Had such an event occurred today, reports likely would have spread quickly through Twitter and Facebook, with links to videos on YouTube. But in 1997, the eyewitness reports and handful of videos worked their way slowly into the national consciousness, culminating with a story three months later in USA Today. People across the country seriously considered it was a visit from extraterrestrial aliens.

On the event’s 10th anniversary, officials from the Air National Guard admitted what many had surmised – the lights were flares, and they had been dropped during training exercises over the Barry M. Goldwater Range.

Ed Jones, then a Lt. Col. for the 104th Fighter Squadron of the Maryland National Guard, said he was flying one of the four A-10s that dropped the flares.

That admission has done little to extinguish the mystery, however, as the Phoenix Lights still burn brightly for those who believe we are not alone.

By R. R. Stark

The wrong question to ask is: why aren’t we blatantly seeing UFOs everywhere in the skies across the world? It sure seems like the right question. But it isn’t. The right question is: why is the government not allowing official disclosure to the UFO phenomenon? Why is this the right question? Because countless, possibly thousands of UFOs are blatantly being seen everywhere in our skies across the world. But the government doesn’t acknowledge it, and furthermore, it suppresses such reports. They accuse people of not knowing what they’re seeing, misconstruing what they witness, and that they’re probably intoxicated, drug-induced, mentally ill, sneaky hoaxers, or simply lying. Any reason or excuse is good enough for government work if it helps to quell the whole UFO and ET phenomenon.

What we have here is a failure to allow communication. That is, between the government and we the people. The problem is that there are too many cover-ups and not enough disclosure.

Another right question is: if we are seeing UFOs everywhere, how many of them are actually alien spaceships from beyond our Earth? Ah-ha! Now we’re getting somewhere! In other words, what are we really seeing up there when we use the ambiguous label of “UFO?”

Actually, most UFOs we see might be experimental aircraft, incorrectly labeled objects (like birds, planes, weather balloons, Frisbees, kites, Venus, swamp gas, etc.) or something else quite terrestrial. The smaller percentage most likely is extraterrestrial spacecraft. But that’s enough to motivate us to act on it and endeavor to reveal the truth.

There are several theories regarding the US government involvement with –not UFOs!– alien spacecraft, and especially with aliens themselves. One theory is, the government doesn’t really know enough, not as much as it would like to know; so naturally, it insists there is no real UFO phenomenon, hence, referring to UFO eyewitnesses as crackpots.

The next theory is, the government definitely acknowledges alien spacecraft, via the military and especially the Air Force, whose pilots have had numerous sightings, and other plausible eyewitnesses too, but since it doesn’t know what to really do about the situation, it initiated the usual cover-ups, especially the Roswell crash.

The third theory is that the US government is in direct contact with intelligent extraterrestrials, but they keep this fact top-secret, that the two factions have formed some kind of alliance, which includes that the aliens will help us in advancing our technology if we let them perform abductions of humans and cattle mutilations. Doesn’t this last notion sound totally preposterous? Yet some people actually believe this. To verify this claim, Colin Wilson in his book Alien Dawn says, “…the US government had been in contact with aliens and had made an agreement, according to which the aliens were given a base at Groom Lake, near Las Vegas (also known as Area 51) as well as permission to mutilate cattle and abduct human beings, in exchange for teaching US experts about technology.” However, others claim this is just another whacked-out conspiracy theory, or even intentional disinformation. Keep in mind, much of this UFO propaganda is meant to sound absurd so that people will be discouraged and eventually see that the whole thing is too ridiculous to be true. Why else do we see photos of the president shaking hands with some grey alien in the tabloid rags?

Another weatherworn question is: why is the US government covering up the UFO phenomenon in the first place? Answers stem from: because they don’t know enough to declare anything substantial, to the idea that they’re hiding something dreadful from us that they know about and the public would panic over if we all knew. But like what? Government-sanctioned abductions by aliens? And experiments performed on humans? And surgical operations on animals? Or even threat of alien invasion?

The other possibility is that the government officials have painted themselves into a corner. They have been trying to conceal the whole thing for so long, keeping control of the information, even if they wanted to initiate final disclosure, they would be likewise admitting that they have been lying to the public all this time.

I believe it’s time to take the US government out of the UFO equation. As long as they’re playing games about the whole matter, as long as they seem to — or pretend to — have secrets about it, as long as they distribute disinformation to the masses in an attempt to confuse us or create doubt, then we need to walk away from the controlling and manipulating political arena. We need to stop waiting on the US government to declare an official act of disclosure regarding UFOs, alien craft, and aliens. Most likely they never will. So we the people have to be the ones initiating disclosure. And many reporters, authors, eyewitnesses, whistleblowers, etc. have been doing just that. You have to look to them, not our stubborn government, which is in denial.

So for the record, folks, as a card-carrying member of we the people let me state it once and for all: Disclosure is here!

Alright. Now what?

A few days ago, a “UFO” was spotted cruising down a main street in Cowley County, Kansas. It wasn’t in the skies, but instead being hauled on a flatbed truck driving down the middle of US Highway 77.

From at least one angle, the strange-shape aircraft resembled a saucer, and was covered by what appeared to be an industrial-strength tarp (or perhaps a badly malfunctioning cloaking device).

The vehicle, at about 30 feet across, was so big that local law enforcement had to remove roadside signs to allow safe passage — as well as some measure of security. Many locals suspected (or at least joked) that that it might have been a UFO or some top-secret aircraft. Local sheriff Don Read said he was not allowed to divulge much about the mysterious craft, though he did let slip the detail that it was not recovered at a crash site, but rather had been manufactured by the aerospace company Northrop Grumman.

Yet many people wondered why, if it was a known craft (even a secretive one), wouldn’t the company simply fly the craft to its destination. Perhaps it needed repair or maintenance; but if so, wouldn’t it be easier to bring the mechanics and parts to the aircraft, instead of taking it to the nation’s highways? Speculation ran rampant, fueled by YouTube videos and news reports about the strange sight. [ Hunter Captures UFO in Nevada ]

Finally, a man named Brooks McKinney stepped forward to pierce the veil of mystery and conspiracy. McKinney, senior manager of public relations at Northrop Grumman, told Life’s Little Mysteries that the suspected UFO was in fact an X-47B, an unmanned combat drone designed to operate from aircraft carriers.

The X-47B has an impressive wingspan of 62 feet (just over 30 feet with wings folded); a length of nearly 40 feet; and stands about 10 feet high on three wheels. The X-47B in the video was headed to a Naval air station in Maryland.

“We built two for the Navy, they were being tested at Edwards Air Force Base [in California] since March,” McKinney said. “One is on its way to Maryland, and the other will remain in California.” He took the UFO speculation in good humor, though, and understood the curiosity: “Clearly people are interested in what’s going through town. It’s unusual to see a shrink-wrapped aircraft, especially one with that shape.”

The reason it wasn’t simply flown across the country is deceptively simple: “It’s difficult to fly an unmanned drone through commercial airspace,” McKinney explained. Piloted aircraft are one thing, but long trips for large aircraft without a human pilot on board are frowned upon for both aviation security reasons and practical concerns.

On the other hand, perhaps the X-47B is just a convenient cover story, and it really is a captured flying saucer. We’ll leave it to you to decide.

On Dec. 1, a camera onboard NASA’s STEREO spacecraft recorded a wave of electrically charged material shooting out from the sun and blasting Mercury. Footage of this “coronal mass ejection” (CME), as such events are called, has caught the attention of alien-hunters, who say it has unveiled a giant, “cloaked” spaceship parked near the solar system’s innermost planet.

In the footage, one sees a huge spurt of plasma and other solar ejecta washing over Mercury; peculiarly, the material seems to flare up as it hits another nearby object, too. “It’s cylindrical on either side and has a shape in the middle. It definitely looks like a ship to me, and very obviously, it’s cloaked,” YouTube-user siniXster said in his video commentary on the footage, which has quickly spread across the Web.
